Van Ness is a long street, but in general it's a decent place to stay. The only part I can think of that someone might call terrible is towards the mission. The mid part is near the SF opera and symphony halls, and farther up is close to lombard street and the northern part of the city. Yes, you will see panhandlers and people is doorways but you will see that in all parts of the town. It's not real close to the Fillmore, but that is probably a good thing. Depending where on Van Ness, about a 5 to 10 minute cab ride to the show.
How many others will be here from out of town? We should pick a spot to meet before the show. I'll start thinking of a good place, Britt any ideas?

jen415 is pretty spot with details on Van Ness. In addition to parts of the Mission that Van Ness stretches southward into, the Tenderloin is also a rough neighborhood that is nearby (eastward of Van Ness). Surprisingly, the Theatre district and City Hall are on the edges of the Tenderloin, as well as, Market St.
I won't make the shows, but may I suggest a meetup in the northern part of Fillmore area around Japantown. It's relatively safe area in the Fillmore, closeby to the venue, and plenty of bars and noodle shops to choose.
Have fun!

Just did a little internet searching and read that if you are going to a show at the Fillmore, you can show the door guy at John Lee Hooker's Boom Boom Room your ticket and get in without a cover charge. Nice spot with lots of blues history and right across Geary from the show. Worth a try if anyone is up for it.

Sounds good Britt, I can meet wherever. Was thinking more for anyone from out of town, someplace for when we are close to the Fillmore. See you soon!

Shit, I wish they played at the Filmore when I lived there. The only time I got to see Social D in SF was at Slims ... Pretty nasty place, but not as bad as Bottom of the Hill I guess.

Doh!!!! Ok, will do Britt. I'm getting in tomorrow night, so we gotta figure out what we're doing on Friday before the show. I've got some random friends show up for different shows, just don't know which ones yet.
See ya'll this weekend!
